Can you believe it’s nearly Thanksgiving?! Whether you’re planning a quiet dinner at home or are travelling to see family, here are 10 tips to make sure your Thanksgiving is as safe as it is enjoyable.

Food safety tips:

  1. You can keep a whole, uncooked turkey for two to three days in the fridge or up to one year in the freezer.
  2. Use one cutting board for produce, and one for meat.
  3. Cook your turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 74 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Fahrenheit).
  4. Chill leftovers within two hours to avoid the risk of food-borne illness.
  5. Cooked turkey will keep in the fridge for three to four days – after that, toss it out.

Travel safety tips:

  1. Plan your route. Visit www.drivebc.ca to learn about highway closures, ferry delays and border waits.
  2. If your route takes you through high mountain passes, make sure you’re prepared to obey winter tire and chain signs (in effect from Oct. 1 – March 31).
  3. Brush up on how to handle black ice with this helpful article from TranBC (the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure).
  4. Do a quick check to ensure your emergency car kit supplies are in good order.
  5. If you’re travelling with a furry family member, make sure they’re safe, too! Here are a few tips from ICBC.

And don’t forget, if you are planning a last minute getaway, ensure that your travel plans are protected by booking with a British Columbia travel agent licensed by Consumer Protection BC.

I hope these tips were helpful – have a good holiday weekend!
