Elements Cremation, Pre-planning & Burial is in the process of reassigning its customer’s preneed funeral service contracts, to Martin Brothers Funeral Services, another licensed BC funeral provider.
In July 2024, Consumer Protection BC suspended the licence of Elements Cremation, Pre-planning & Burial (Elements), a funeral provider based in Langley, BC, due to concerns about the financial status of the business.
Consumer Protection BC has been working with both businesses and the preneed insurance provider, TruStage Life of Canada (TruStage), to support the reassignment process and ensure contracts are fulfilled during the transition.
Customers of Elements have the option to have their preneed funeral contracts fulfilled by Martin Brothers Funeral Services (Martin Brothers) or cancel their contract with Elements and make alternate arrangements with another funeral provider.
Information for impacted customers
When you sign a preneed funeral services contract with an insurance policy, there are two important documents to consider:
- The preneed contract is the one you signed with the funeral provider that outlines the details of funeral goods/services that will be delivered later.
- The insurance policy is the document that names a beneficiary, which is the funeral provider who agreed to deliver the funeral services once they are needed.
If you are an Elements customer, you may have received an email about your preneed contract. You have options:
- Accept the assignment to Martin Brothers. To do this you will need to:
- Fill out the ‘Pre-Planned Contract Transfer Form’ provided to you from Elements/Martin Brothers or contact them directly.
- Contact TruStage to authorize the beneficiary change to Martin Brothers and ensure that the policy has been updated properly.
- Cancel your contract with Elements and make other arrangements. To do this you will need to:
- Cancel your preneed contract with Elements.
- Work with your new funeral provider to arrange a funeral contract that meets your needs.
- Review your new proposed funeral contract diligently and ensure your existing insurance policy through TruStage will cover the services. Remember that there is no guarantee that the new funeral home will match the pricing or services offered in your original Elements contract.
- Contact TruStage to ensure your insurance policy is updated with the new beneficiary (the new funeral provider).
