We want all job candidates to enjoy equal opportunity in our hiring process. If you are a person living with a disability and you need an accommodation for any part of the application or hiring process, please reach out to us.
Let’s talk more about that.
What is an accommodation?
Accommodation refers to modifying employment requirements, rules or policies that could be considered discriminatory because they have a negative effect on an individual or protected group. Accommodations are requests that alter a typical interview process and are often based on physical accessibility and/or disability needs. For example, someone who has difficulty hearing might require a seating arrangement in the interview that allows them to see the interviewer’s face clearly to help with lip reading. Or maybe someone with allergies might need a scent-free environment, or someone prone to migraines might need natural light.
In BC, employers have a duty to accommodate. That means that sometimes it is necessary to treat someone differently in order to prevent discrimination on one of the BC Human Rights Code protected grounds. These protected grounds include Indigenous identity, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age of that person or that group or class of persons. This protection is intended to ensure equitable access to employment opportunities and fair treatment in the workplace.
Asking for an accommodation
Once you have been offered an interview, reach out to us to request an accommodation before you show up for the interview. Please give us as much notice and information as possible. Notice helps us:
- assess the request and see if we can make the necessary accommodation in time (we usually can if we have enough notice)
- properly set up an accommodation before you arrive (this is why we need to know the nature and extent of your needs in advance)
Can I ask for anything?
Requesting your favourite candy be present for the interview isn’t an accommodation. Accommodations are based on protected grounds and give equitable access to employment opportunities. If you are unsure about your request, please reach out to our People & Culture team as soon as you can.
