Have you already arranged and paid for funeral services? These preneed contracts secure most costs at the current rate, even if the services take place many years later. If you change your mind and want to cancel your preneed contract, here’s what you should know.
Cancelling your preneed contract
If you purchased and signed the contract for yourself or as a representative of the deceased, you can cancel a preneed contract at any time. Depending on when you cancel, you may only receive 80% of what you paid, plus interest. It’s important to understand that there may be some items that are non-refundable.
Your preneed contract cancellation rights
- You have 15 days to cancel a preneed contract for any reason and receive a full refund.
- You must get a copy of the preneed contract within 15 days of signing.
- If you don’t get a copy of the contract, you can cancel and get a full refund.
- Be aware that items that are personalized or unique may not be refundable.

At-need funeral contracts are established after the death has occurred and cancelling an at-need contract is different. Any cancellation terms are written in the contract so make sure you read all the details before signing it.
The law in BC
Certain aspects of funeral services are regulated in BC to protect you during this challenging time. Funeral services are governed in BC under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act (and regulations) and the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act , and the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Regulation. We oversee those laws and funeral homes and funeral directors must hold a licence with us. Always check that a funeral home or provider is licensed with us using our online search feature.
