With a huge tropical storm, Hurricane Sandy, set to hit the East Coast in mere hours, it is expected that thousands of flights to and from the area will be impacted, causing a ripple effect of disruption for other travellers as their originating or connecting flights are cancelled, delayed and/or diverted. While we cannot control the weather, we can be prepared for what to do if our air travel plans are impacted by weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Check your travel status before going to the airport.
Even though the bad weather may not be in your area, it may impact your flights if they are originating elsewhere. Check online to see if flights have been delayed or cancelled due to the bad weather.
Find out your options.
In exceptional circumstances, airlines may waive change or cancellation fees. Find out if this is a one-time waiver and under what circumstances the waiver applies. You might also want to see if you have the option to be put on a waiting list for an earlier flight.
Contact your credit card and insurance provider.
Find out what your insurance provider or credit card company will cover in such an event. Keep track of all your receipts for any additional expenses you incur due to delays and cancellations in the event they are required.
Stay in touch.
Many airlines share up-to-date information on Twitter or Facebook which can keep you informed of the latest travel advisories and information.
Talk to your travel agent.
If you booked with a travel agent, contact your booking agent for assistance. They will be able to help you with your options for re-booking.
