You may not know that Consumer Protection BC approves adult films and videos in the province of BC. We do this as part of our responsibilities under the Motion Picture Act, which is a law in BC created by the government. We perform a variety of activities under this legislation that helps restrict access to adult films and videos by younger audiences.
Quick facts:
- We license adult video retailers. They must be appropriately licensed with us and anyone under 18 years old is not allowed to enter areas where adult videos are sold and rented.
- All adult films for sale or rental in BC must be sent to, and approved by us. We put an official decal on the DVD so that consumers can feel confident that the film has been reviewed and approved. The decal also protects licensed distributors from illegal piracy.
- We inspect video retailers and seize unapproved videos or DVDs which may ultimately be destroyed.
During a routine inspection of a video retailer in the Lower Mainland recently, Consumer Protection BC seized approximately 40,000 un-decaled and illegally copied adult videos.
