Break out the red and white – Canada Day is just a week away! Taking a break from the norm, here are our top four tips on how to be safe during this holiday weekend.

  1. Be cautious when driving. More people are bound to be out on the road (both in cars and on foot), so be alert and aware if you’re planning to be behind the wheel. Watch for animals on the road who may be spooked from the loud fireworks, too.
  2. Think food safe. If you’re planning a backyard barbeque this Canada Day, be sure to read up on Health Canada’s food safety tips so you don’t spend July 2 in bed with food poisoning.
  3. Prepare your pooch. If your city is planning fireworks and you have a furry friend at home, you may want to consider putting him or her in a quiet room with food, water and a favourite toy until the revelry has subsided.
  4. Stand out in the crowd. Make sure you wear bright, reflective clothing and only cross streets at designated crosswalks this Canada Day. Use crosswalks and walk facing traffic.

From everyone here at Consumer Protection BC, have a fun and safe Canada Day!
