There are some interesting things happening with the telecommunications industry lately. As you may know, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunication Commission (CRTC) created a National Do Not Call List which has been helping Canadians reduce the number of telemarketing calls they receive. Here’s the latest news from the CRTC on how this process is going.
The National Do Not Call List was launched in September of 2008. It was designed to restrict telemarketing calls from Canadian businesses although there are a few exemptions. Some people who registered on the list found that they continued to receive calls and they were encouraged to report the calls to the CRTC. The CRTC took the information received and conducted a five-month investigation to look into potential violations. On April 2nd, 2012, the CRTC reported that action was taken against 85 companies for breaking the telemarketing rules. 74 of these businesses were found to breach minor violations and 11 businesses were found to have made more significant breaches. Those 11 companies were fined administrative penalties of $41,000.
