{February 17, 2011} VICTORIA, BC – Consumer Protection BC is enhancing its service delivery by providing licensed motion picture distributors with a voluntary classification service for home video products. This service is being initiated following a number of requests from the industry. Licensed distributors may now submit their home video product to us and use BC’s classification to contribute to the Canadian Motion Picture Distributor Association’s Canadian Home Video Rating System. The fee for this classification service is $40 per title which does not include enforcement or piracy protection. For every title submitted, Consumer Protection BC will provide distributors with a classification category (G, PG, 14A or 18A) as well as an applicable advisory. Please note that submissions are optional for distributors and is not a requirement under the law. This initiative further enhances the services currently provided by Consumer Protection BC to the motion picture industry and is separate from Consumer Protection BC’s Adult Video program. Consumer Protection BC is a not-for-profit corporation that was created to strengthen consumer protection in BC and enforce consumer protection laws. We balance the interests of all parties to promote a marketplace that is fair for both BC consumers and businesses. We license and inspect specific industries, classify films, respond to inquiries through our Inquiry Centre, investigate alleged violations of consumer protection laws, and educate consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities under the law.
