Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Print E-mail

By law, cemeteries, crematoriums, funeral service providers and funeral directors are required to be licensed in BC.  Here are some general consumer tips to help you make informed decisions when embarking on the difficult task of making end-of-life arrangements for yourself or a loved one:

  • Share your wishes with your family. When making your own funeral arrangements, talk to your family about what you have decided so they know what to expect and can honour your wishes.
  • Shop around and ask to see a price list. Prices for funeral services are not regulated and can vary widely. However, all funeral providers must display price lists in plain view and give you accurate, up-to-date information.
  • Read the by-laws. When looking into interment, inquire into the rules of the cemetery. You could find out that certain items that you desire (such as erecting a fence) are not permitted, which may affect your decision.
  • When entering into a pre-need contract, ask about your cancellation rights. By law, you have the right to cancel your pre-need contract anytime, but be aware that there may be administrative costs involved.
  • Educate yourself. It’s important to know what is and isn’t required as part of putting someone to rest. For example, some people are not aware that as long as you have permission of the landowner or local government, there are no limitations on where ashes can be spread.
