Tips to Help you Enjoy Your Trip Print E-mail

You may be interested in bargains when making travel plans, but it’s a good idea to look beyond the price tag and the glossy travel brochures to ensure you get the services you're paying for. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your trip:

  • Book your travel through a licensed BC travel agent or wholesaler.  This will give you the added protection of the Travel Assurance Fund. Check here to find out if your travel agent is licensed.
  • Read all the fine print.  A deal may look great but there may be restrictions on when you can travel, what services are actually covered in your “all inclusive” or what charges are included on the advertised airline price.
  • Know your cancellation rights and refund policy.  Sometimes the unexpected happens and you may decide to cancel your trip.  Know the terms and conditions for what refund you might be entitled to if you voluntarily cancel your trip.
  • Ask if deposits are required even if you have prepaid for a service. For example it is likely credit a card number will be required when checking in to cover incidental costs or damages, even if you have prepaid for the service.
  • Request a copy of your travel services contract and keep all receipts.
  • Review all your documentation prior to your departure and know what you paid for.  Make sure the extras that you expect are included such as transportation to and from the airport or day excursions.
  • Double check the departure times as airlines sometimes change departure times.  For many airlines you can sign up for automatic notification of any flight time changes.  This will avoid hassle later if you find your flight time has been changed.
  • Check with the travel provider to make sure that your booking is made.  If you are uncertain, you can always contact the hotel, airline of other travel service provider to make sure that your booking is complete.
  • Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

When you book with a licensed BC travel agent and do not receive your contracted travel services, you may be eligible for compensation from the BC Travel Assurance Fund.
