Can I Return a New Car?

Can I Return a New Car? 1968DodgeCharger on Flickr

Our Inquiry team often receives calls from consumers who have just purchased a car from a BC dealership. The most common question we are asked is whether or not they can return the car if they are not satisfied. Often consumers think there is a grace period where they can return the car but this is not the case.  Once you purchase the car, most often you can’t return it.

The organization which oversees the law governing certain aspects of dealerships is the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia.  Check out a recent blog post of theirs for more information about returning a car purchased from a dealership

Betty the Ford a 95 Escort wagon I have purchased. I did not paid much for that piece. The wagon has only 65,000 miles and the deal promise me the engine will last for long. I had to spent $1000 for some body parts since I had it . It’s almost 2 years I bought it. I also insured it well its not also of much but still I have it. Now I am interested in buying new car but want to pay $1000 per two years rather than paying annual. Thinking to sell my car for down payment. Some of the customers I experienced for my old car advised me to keep it as to buy new cheap car is not good if you have a good one.Any one here to advise me please I am highly oblised. Email me at .

Hi there, thanks for your comment.
Unfortunately, this isn't our area of expertize but perhaps you may want to contact the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia. Check out their blog at http://vsastories.blogspot.com/. They have some great information (including videos) and you could probably ask your question there.
I hope this helps!

Wow. This is good to know. I am in the process of buying a car because its cheaper to buy new than search for used car parts in BC but I figured if I didn't like the car I could return it.

Hello Raj,
Private transactions are not regulated and as a result it is up the parties involve to attempt a resolution if possible. If this is not possible the matter may need to be resolved in a court of law. I'm sorry we could be of more help.

Bought a 2012 car from a used dealership, is there room to return if we have had it for less than a month and had to have Nissan replace and fix parts already?

Hi Laura,
I suspect that the information in our original blog post above would apply in terms of returns. Having said that, the organization which oversees the law governing certain aspects of dealerships is the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia. I would suggest you contact them just to be sure. Their website is: http://www.mvsabc.com/

Here is their blog post on the issue: http://www.mvsabc.com/blog/what-you-should-know-about-vehicle-returns
